General Description

Sewerage Catchment:

  • Barrack Point outfall is the discharge point for the Shellharbour STP which services the residential, commercial and industrial area of Shellharbour and suburbs on the southern side of Lake Illawarra (MHL769 1997).

Sewage Treatment:

  • Shellharbour STP was commissioned in 1974 and is an activated sludge plant which provides secondary treatment by screening, grit removal, sedimentation, biological treatment and disinfection by chlorine. As sewage flows increase beyond 28.5 ML/day (usually during wet weather) all sewage passes through the screening, grit and primary tanks before a bypass channel takes additional flow around the secondary process. This partially treated flow is recombined with the fully treated effluent before disinfection and discharge through the ocean outfall.

Outfall:

  • The ocean outfall extends approximately 130m offshore from Barrack Point. A 12-port diffuser is located in approximately 10m water depth.
