Shellharbour STP was commissioned in
1974 and is an activated sludge plant which provides secondary
treatment by screening, grit removal, sedimentation, biological
treatment and disinfection by chlorine. As sewage flows increase
beyond 28.5 ML/day (usually during wet weather) all sewage passes
through the screening, grit and primary tanks before a bypass channel
takes additional flow around the secondary process. This partially
treated flow is recombined with the fully treated effluent before
disinfection and discharge through the ocean outfall.
